Children experience hands-on WWII in the March 2012 Event
In partnership with the CfBT, we spent one more week in March 2012 at their Environmental Centre, in Freiston. Several schools came to the centre over the week to take part in this exciting learning event. The children split into four groups, which rotated during the day to each experience four separate activities.
3) The children had a hands-on cooking lesson, using only rationed ingredients available during the war. They baked carrot cookies which were delicious!
4) All the children had a go at scaling the Centre’s climbing tower, working as a team to get the best out of this fantastic opportunity.
1) After hearing a siren in the Centre, the children evacuated to an air-raid shelter in the wooded area nearby, where they experienced the sights and sounds of an actual air raid. They also were encouraged to write letters home whilst in the shelter, as they would have done as evacuees during the war.
2) The children dressed in authentic WWII uniforms and were taken from the centre in our army truck to the Freiston Shore WWII Coastal Defence buildings to learn about, and experience, what it would have been like to be a soldier in the 1940’s.
